Nablus (West Bank): Thirty-year-old Maha Qatouni was a month away from giving birth to her fourth child but no more.
Early Thursday morning, Israeli soldiers entered the crowded Ain el-Mai refugee camp in the northern west bank city of Nablus. Gunfire woke Maha and her husband Rafaat.
“The shooting was more than you can imagine. It was terrifying,” said Rafaat.
Gathering information on the incident, UN workers are told Maha left the bedroom to check on the children a single bullet struck her from behind.
Doctors say the round ripped through her abdomen, killing her 8-month-old foetus.
“I'm just wondering where the soldiers were. It seems they were on one of the roofs,” he says.
From outside, a small hole in the curtain shows where the bullet entered and regardless of who fired the shot, Maha's mother, Fawzia, says Maha's three children are traumatised.
“Her six-year old son became hysterical. He saw his mother get out of bed, then fall to the ground wounded and gushing blood. He thought she was dead,” said Fawzia.
They left children traumatized and a mother, permanently scarred. Who fired the bullet may never be known, but the damage is beyond doubt.
