CNN-IBN: America has voted for change now, as a campaigner against apartheid, how do you view Barack Obama's victory?
Dr Nadine Gordimer: I'm delighted that Barack Obama has indeed put an end to the Bush-type regime. I don't look at it narrowly from the point of view that he's black and it's led to him being elected.
Nobody seems to point out that he's black and white. In his own DNA, his own blood he is reconciliation between white and black because he has one white parent and one black. And I think that is very important.
CNN-IBN: You've seen South Africa through its toughest times during apartheid and after. When you look at the new integrated South Africa, is it close to the ideal you had envisioned the country?
Dr Nadine Gordimer: Of course because, let me emphasise we have had 14 years, not even a generation of freedom. We are expected to establish a true non-racist democracy in 14 years. Look at Europe and other countries there's a lot of racism and they've had hundreds of years to create democracy.
