A rhino's endless wait for a mate

Guwahati: A majority of the world's Asiatic rhinos live in Assam. But, it seems to be an endless wait to find a mate for Mohan, an African rhino, living at the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati.

Living in the city’s state zoo since childhood, this 35-year-old rhino has been without a mate simply because he is different.

"He is a white African rhino, very different from the single-horned rhinos found in Assam," rhino keeper, Govinda Sharma said.

While the zoo authorities did bring a companion for Mohan’s neighbour, Aniruddha, a Royal Bengal Tiger, they can't seem to do the same for Mohan.

"It is not possible to breed an Asiatic rhino with a white African rhino,” Divisional Forest Officer, Assam State Zoo, Narayan Mahanta said.

Looking around for a suitable mate in nearby zoos hasn't helped either.

"In India unfortunately there is no surplus female white African rhino which can be brought for breeding purpose," Mahanta explained.

A lone rhino in Assam may seem like a little odd to most people but zoo authorities know better and they will settle for nothing less than an African bride for Mohan and till that happens he is destined to be single.
