Send kids to school closest to home: Govt

Aasim KhanAasim Khan, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: If you have been thinking of sending your child to the best school in town – despite it being located 20 km away from your place of residence – think again.

The Government has finalised the Right to Education Bill and, among other things, it says children should attend school located in their neighbourhood.

With the HRD Ministry giving a nod to the draft of the Bill, it is all set to become a law from 2009 academic year.

The Planning Commission is now taking a close look at the draft. Soon, it will be ready for approval by the Cabinet.

The Government had guaranteed the right to universal education in a constitutional amendment four years ago. Now the law is being made ready to guarantee that right.

Some of the salient features of the draft legislation are

  • 25 per cent of the seats in private schools will be reserved for the economically weaker section.
  • Money for education of the poorer section will be provided by the government.
  • Admissions will be on the basis of Common School System which means those living in the immediate neighbourhood will be given preference during admissions.

The rich must accommodate the poor in schools - this is the key feature the Bill and the Government wants to be strict in implementing the neighbourhood preference.

Educationists believe that it is the best way of guaranteeing access to everybody in education.

Without this, there is a possibility the richer schools may continue to neglect the education of the poor living in the vicinity of the school.
