Bangalore: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Madhavan Nair is a very proud man after America space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) public acknowledgment of his organisation's contribution to discovering water on the moon.
Nair told CNN-IBN that India's second moon mission Chandrayaan-2 will carry more instruments to build on this stunning discovery.
CNN-IBN: Did you have an idea before this discovery that there was water on the moon?
Madhavan Nair: In February we had some data and then we revisited the data and cross checked it and these actions were completed just two months back.
CNN-IBN: When you first discovered about water on the moon, did you feel some disbelief?
Madhavan Nair: Whenever there is any such data it has to be cross checked and authenticated. So we did all that and that is why it took us time to announce it.
CNN-IBN: What role did Indian instruments play in this discovery?
Madhavan Nair: Indian instruments helped in identifying the various terrain features and also the other mineral components and also the kind of reflectivity on the surface and more than that the Chandrayaan itself was responsible for putting the instrument on the right location.
CNN-IBN: What you're going to change in Chandrayaan-2 instruments to back up this kind of water discovery?
Madhavan Nair: I think now there is strong interest that we should have more instrumentation for water. But we will look at it.
CNN-IBN:What does this mean in terms of setting up a lunar base for further inter-planetary research?
Madhavan Nair: I will say its a small step towards human colonization of the moon.
