Gurgaon: It has fast earned the reputation of a killer expressway. Around 130 people have died in accidents in the 28 km long Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on NH8 ever since it was opened in January 2008 - most of them two-wheeler drivers or pedestrians.
DCP Traffic Gurgaon Satyendra Gupta says, "I believe there should be more foot over-bridges. Around 90 per cent of those who are dying are pedestrians and two-wheelers."
Five foot over-bridges are being constructed for pedestrians on the Gurgaon side of the expressway. Also the Gurgaon Police have made it compulsory for two-wheelers to use a seperate service lane. But the number of casualties still remain high as most people are not even aware of the new steps.
They say that it's not possible to see sign boards when they are driving motorcycles.
On the Delhi side, the police are not even able to enforce the use of the separate service lane.
DCP Traffic South Delhi says, "There is no dedicated service lane. On NH 8, the speed limit is 80 kms and it will be better if there is a separate lane for two-wheelers and three-wheelers."
Most of the deaths have however happened on the Gurgaon side. Police claim the numbers have come down by 75 per cent ever since they launched the drive. But even after that, in the last two months, 12 people have died on this side of the expressway.
