New Delhi: After Amitabh Bachchan, another Bollywood star Aamir Khan is under scanner for his land purchase near Pune with Maharashtra government ordering an inquiry into the allegation that he had got the land from claiming to be a farmer.

Aamir said that he has the right to own the land and that he is an "agriculturist by birth in the true definition of the word.”

Revenue Minister Narayan Rane ordered the inquiry by the Pune District Collector into Aamir's purchase of agricultural land in the scenic Maval taluka of Pune district.

Revenue Minister Narayan Rane ordered the inquiry by the Pune District Collector into Khan's purchase of agricultural land in the scenic Maval taluka of Pune district.

Rane said every Indian citizen has a right to purchase agricultural land provided that he has documents to claim that he is a farmer by profession but added that he did not have any specific information or details about Aamir's case.

The Minister warned the administration would take strict action if anyone were found to have used fake documents to buy agricultural land.

Khan said in a statement, "I am an actor and artist by profession, but by birth I am an agriculturist in the true definition of the word. I come from an agricultural family".

"My father, along with his brothers and sisters, owns agricultural property in the form of mango orchards in Shahbaad, Uttar Pradesh. By virtue of being the son of a bonafide agriculturist, I am also an agriculturist. Before firming up the idea of purchasing landed property, I conducted the due diligence," Aamir said.

Bachchan had also bought agriculture land in Maval claiming to be a farmer and the Pune district authorities are looking into the matter.

A court in Uttar Pradesh recently ruled out that Bachchan is not a farmer and struck down allotment of farmland to him in Barabanki.

Bachchan has challenged the order in Allahabad High Court. Earlier, the Mayawati government acted on a court order and confiscated his land in Barabanki.
