New Delhi: Finally there is hope of survival for the 21-day old baby battling with a heart disease at the Apollo hospital in Delhi.

After the news about the abandoned baby spread, the city hospitals decided to offer free treatment to the critically ill infant on Wednesday.

The Apollo Hospital's offer of free treatment comes as a welcome blessing. Earlier on Wednesday, the baby’s family came back to reclaim their child. The baby's father says he abandoned the child, as he is too poor to pay for his treatment.

“I was badly in need of money and expenses at the nursing home were going up. I had no option but abandon the child,” said Rajiv Kumar Ranjan, child's father.

The unnamed infant was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition. Since the parents lacked finances (Rs 1 lakh) needed for the treatment, they abandoned the child at a Gurgaon hospital and went arranging for the money. The odds were stacked against him until Delhi's Apollo Hospital voluntarily took him under its care.

An expert team of doctors at the hospital will now do their best to save his life. “We have a unit of experts treating the baby here. The cardiologists and the heart specialists are looking into his case. Once that his condition improves, we will be able to tell you better,” said Dr Ali at the Apollo Hospital;

While the baby is now reunited with his mother, he also finds a family in hundreds of well-wishers pouring in to wish him good health at the hospital.
