London: Could 9-year-old Gurrinder Singh be a victim of child trafficking? It's been a week since the child was found abandoned at a London bus stop and no one has come to claim him yet.
The police are investigating whether Gurrinder was caught in a human trafficking racket, which so far has targeted only women.
Gurrinder Singh is being cared for by the social services who have placed him with a foster family. The police will resume questioning him on Tuesday after he is rested and gets used to his new environment.
They hope that he might be able to give some more details about how he got here, and who was he with all this time.
What is quite intriguing is that if he has been with a 'white uncle' as he says, how is it that a nine-year-old hasn't picked up even a word of English.
In the past, there have been reports of Asian and Somalian human trafficking gangs operating in Southall. However, until now, illegal immigrants or women were the usual targets for these gangs.
Labour MP, Southall, Virendra Sharma says, "Yes there have been arrests in the past and police investigations continue, but a nine-year-old? It will be interesting to see what happens and what is the motive behind this.
The police are looking at CCTV footage from bus stops in the vicinity to try and trace the white man accompanying Gurrinder. They continue to appeal for more information, anything that will help them solve the mystery of the abandoned child.
