KOCHI: The academic community of Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has decided to support the cause of Joseph Makkolil, a scientist at the Inter-University Centre for Nanomaterials and Devices (IUCND), whose service has been sought to be terminated by the university.
A large number of scholars, former members of the Syndicate, directors of various schools of the university, heads of departments, leaders of teachers’ unions and faculty members demanded that Joseph Makkolil be accorded due role and position at the IUCND.
In a statement issued, they said: “The decision of the Syndicate comes as an attempt by the authorities to bring an abrupt end to the process initiated in the Syndicate at the instance of Kerala High Court to consider Joseph’s claims for a regular post at the IUCNMD.
” “The decision undermines the earlier decision of the Standing Committee of the Syndicate on Finance and Purchase, Academic and Staff and Establishment, which had recommended designating Joseph as a scientist with the status and remuneration of a reader.
” The academic community demanded that ahead of the university Syndicate meeting, scheduled to be held on May 16 and 17, Joseph Makkolil should be accorded a role and position that suits his credentials and contribution to the IUCND.
