New Delhi: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh on Saturday stepped into controversy after saying that good-looking girls and mobile phones were primary reasons for road accidents. "If you have a good motorcycle, good mobile and a beautiful girlfriend, accidents are bound to happen," he told media.
The BJP leader is not the first one to make such a controversial remark. In India, it is the order of the day, especially amongst the politicians. Recently, a BSP MLA had said that women had no need for mobile phones and that they remained distracted by it.
The Khaps in Haryana blamed the victims for the ever-increasing crime rate against women in the state and found out an even astonishingly cruel solution to rape: child marriage. One Khap panchayat member explained: "If girls are married at a younger age, they have their husbands to take care of their sexual needs and they will not venture out."
Another Khap panchayat member blamed certain food items for the rising incidents of rape. Khap leader Jitender Chhataar said that men experienced hormonal imbalances when they ate chowmein and momos after which they committed rape.
