New Delhi: One of the key accused arrested by Delhi Police arrest for trying to access Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Arun Jaitley's phone records was earlier arrested in the Amar Singh phone tapping case. The accused Anurag Singh was arrested along with Nitish by the police which takes the total number of people arrested to four.
Both Nitish and Anurag are private detectives. Police officials believe that Anurag is the mastermind but are not ruling out further arrests in the case. Sources say Anurag claims he was trying to procure call details for someone who could have helped him out with the charges he was facing in the Amar Singh phone tapping case.
Earlier the police had arrested one constable and another private detective Neeraj. Police sources have indicated to CNN-IBN that the two accused arrested may have even tried to procure call details of a few other politicians as well. The Delhi Police's special cell had on Monday sent a report to the Union Home Ministry on the case.
Sources say that a directive has been issued to all top Delhi Police officials to protect their email passwords and not share details with subordinate officers after constable Arvind Dabas claimed he wanted the records for personal reasons. Dabas used the login and password of an assistant commissioner of police to try and access the call details. However, Jaitley's call records were blocked after the request was sent.
Legal officers of the mobile service provider alerted police after the breach. Dabas, who was on leave for five months, was posted in Special Staff of New Delhi district.
The incident happened on January 17 during the run up to the BJP presidential elections. Sources say Dabas was in touch with a broker from the Doon Valley.
