New Delhi: The main accused in the murders of TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan and IT executive Jigisha Ghosh tried to escape from custody Monday by throwing chilli powder at policemen during a hospital visit, Delhi Police said.

Ravi Kapoor, who was arrested March 24 this year, had been taken to Safdarjung Hospital in south Delhi for a check-up when the incident took place, a police officer said.

"We received a call at noon about Kapoor throwing chilli powder in the eyes of one of the three policemen accompanying him for the medical check-up. He tried to escape, but was nabbed immediately," the officer said.

Police are investigating how Kapoor managed to get chilli powder.

Soumya was murdered in the early hours of September 30 last year when she was returning to her south Delhi residence after work. Jigisha, 28, was kidnapped on the night of March 17-18 from outside her residence in south Delhi and smothered to death, with the body found dumped in Surajkund in Haryana.
