New Delhi: A 36-year-old woman was severely injured in the Capital after an acid attack by two unidentified men outside her home in the upmarket Greater Kailash area of Delhi.
Police say the two men threw acid at Tarveen Suri, poured kerosene on her and then attempted to immolate her.
Suri, a small-time fashion designer, sustained 80 per cent burn injuries and was first taken to Holy Family hospital.
She was then rushed to Safdarjung hospital owing to the serious nature of the burns, police said.
Her condition is stated to be critical.
Suri works as a sales manager at the Residency Hotel. Suri's relatives allege that she had been receiving threatening phone calls for several days from a female colleague of her husband. Her family also says she had complained about being followed. Police have registered a case of attempt to murder.
“The police have not told us anything. The girl who is allegedly involved is out of town. Her involvement will be investigated only when she gets back,” says a relative Sarika Bawa.
Suri's mother-in-law, Kusum Suri, who also sustained burn injuries while trying to save her, said the assailants fled from the scene on a motorbike soon after the incident.
"I did not see anything. Tarveen came running inside and as I tried to save her, I also received injuries," she said.
According to police, Suri's mother-in-law and her two-year old child were in their house when the incident occurred.
Her husband, who was in Goa at the time of the incident, returned to Delhi on Sunday morning.
