Mumbai: More heads are rolling in the Adarsh scam. Former IAS officer Subhash Lalla has finally resigned as a member of the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission following allegations of his direct involvement in the scam. Subhash Lalla's daughter and his mother have been direct beneficiaries of the Adarsh Society.
But Lalla, in his resignation letter to the Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan, says: "I was posted in Mantralaya for the first time in mid 2000 as a Secretary to the Social Justice Department and to Chief Minister's office much later in 2004. Hence it may kindly be seen that membership of my relatives is much prior to my coming to Mantralaya"
The other bureaucrat on government's radar is former IAS officer Ramanand Tiwari. He is currently the Chief Information Commissioner and was the secretary of Urban Development Department from 2000 to 2009. He is alleged to have played key role in his son Omkar Tiwari's membership with Adarsh Society.
The pressure is building on the babus to co-operate with the government. While the roles of Tiwari and Lalla are being discussed openly, it’s pertinent to note that there as many as 19 other bureaucrats who may have to answer a lot of questions before they can be given a clean chit. These bureaucrats also face the prospect of facing a high level inquiry under special provisions of All India Service's Conduct Rules.
Meanwhile, another bureaucrat with links to the scam, Swadheen Kashtriya has also been removed as the BMC commissioner.
The scam that claimed the job of former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavhan is threatening to claim more. Army officers involved in the society are also being probed by the Army Court of Inquiry and could be the next in the line of fire.
