Admitted for chest pain, hospital amputates fingers

Mumbai: Hospitals might just term it as a simple case of medical negligence, but for Nazma Bibi life has now taken a turn for the worse. Admitted at the D Y Patil Hospital in Nerul for chest pain, the 30-year-old would have never imagined that the hospital visit would end up amputating her fingers.

For Nazma Bibi even simple daily chores are a struggle now Each day is now a struggle as she struggles with cooking to feed her six children and her husband.

Nazma who complained of chest pain was admitted to the D Y Patil Hospital in Nerul and was advised surgery there. While the surgery was successful, sheer negligence on the hospital's part resulted in her hands being burnt in a hot air warmer kept near the surgery table.

"When I regained consciousness and felt a burning sensation in my hands, doctors first told me that my hand got burnt a little during surgery, but that it would be okay in about two days," says Nazma Bibi who works as a domestic help.

However, hope turned to despair two days later when the burnt fingers were affected with dry gangrene setting in.

Instead of being compensated, all that Nazma got was a crude reply.

"They forced us to sign some documents. When I said I would not sign and asked for some compensation, they told me to either get operated or get out," says she.

Shaikh Nasiruddin, her husband, who is a part- time fruit vendor, does not know what the future holds now.

"I am just a poor fruit vendor. Now with her hands gone, what will we do?" he says in despair.

Handicapped, with no money and mounting medical expenses, the future surely looks bleak for Nazma Bibi and her family.
