New Delhi: Although adulteration of packaged milk is an issue that has haunted consumers and authorities alike for a long time, the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Wednesday came down heavily on the offenders.
The FDA has been on the trail of unauthorised milk vendors for quite some time. But this time, it has cracked down on the dairies as well.
"We got a secret information that adulteration is going on here. So, we raided this place and found that milk from renowned brands was being stored by unauthorised brands at unauthorised places," says Assistant Commissioner of FDA, CB Pawar.
In late night raids conducted across the northern suburbs of Mumbai on Wednesday, the FDA seized over 10,000 packets of branded milk. The regulatory body has also detained the unauthorised dealers.
The packets were diverted from consignments coming into Mumbai from Gujarat — which caters to a quarter of India's 15,000 crore milk supply industry — and left by the wayside, for adulteration by organised gangs.
After the raids, the FDA has lodged a complaint against leading dairies including Amul, Mahanand, Aarey and Gokul. FDA officials say this adulteration racket will stop only when action is taken against the dairies.
The revelations have come as a shocker to most of the residents across Maharashtra. None of the involved companies have however, issued any official statement on the FDA claims as yet.
