New Delhi: The aerostat - a giant helium balloon for which the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee paid almost Rs 70 crore. It was supposed to be a visual delight, a feast for the eye, now it turns out its burnt a hole in the OC's pocket.
An internal OC note accessed by CNN-IBN shows that Suresh Kalmadi led body was forced to accept the aerostat show minus many production features.
The note details how a sausage shaped object had to be removed from the aerostat as there was insufficient time to do any practice around it.
It was initially supposed to have flying performers suspended from the aerostat. Even that wasn't possible.
Now the OC has decided to withhold payment of over a crore rupees to the company managing the performance, K Events, for not using the aerostat to its maximum potential.
The problem was that there was simply not enough time for the organisers to put the aerostat up earlier and check if all these other features could be applied or not. This was the reason why some of those who were responsible for putting it up walked away in a huff.
The aerostat deal is already under the scanner of the investigators. Infact when Suresh Kalmadi was called in for questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation, he was specifically asked about the manner in which the aerostat was purchased.
But perhaps the worse it yet to come for Kalmadi as this giant Rs 70 crore prop now has no buyers. Its fate perhaps is now linked to Suresh Kalmadi's fate itself.
