Afghan forces kill gunmen in Kabul

Kabil: Three gunmen who had taken over a bank in Afghanistan's capital Kabul were gunned down by Afghanistan Special Police Force on Wednesday.

The attack at a branch of the Pashtani Bank early Wednesday in the Jadi Maiwand area of Kabul took place at 6AM local time on Wednesday, just a day ahead of the presidential election in the country.

Soon after the attack Afghan security forces cordoned off the area around the Pashtani Bank branch in Kabul and began their operations.

President Hamid Karzai's government has urged for polls attacks blackout asking the media not to report about the attacks.

On Tuesday militants had fired at the presidential palace and a suicide car bomber attacked a NATO convoy.

Meanwhile, the Taliban has warned of disrupting the elections with spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claiming that 20 armed suicide attackers have entered the city.

At least 12 people were killed in more than a dozen bomb and rocket attacks across Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Campaigning for the presidential election was officially over on Tuesday and on August 20, 17 million voters would their cast votes to choose their next president.

Polls have shown incumbent President Hamid Karzai leading with about 45 per cent votes.

It is a clear lead but not enough to win an outright majority.

If Karzai fails to win a majority in Thursday's first round, he will have to face the second-placed candidate, probably Abdullah, in a run-off in early October.
