Mumbai: The incessant rains in Mumbai have brought back memories of last year for many including Bollywood stars who braved the floods with other citizens.
CNN-IBN correspondent Aarti Kapur Singh caught up with actor Aftab Shivdasani who recalled the mayhem last year.
Aarti Kapur Singh: Aftab you were stuck in shooting last year for Ram Gopal Verma’s film I believe. What was your first reaction when you stepped out and saw the mayhem?
Aftab Shivdasani: Well we were shooting from seven in the morning to 10 at night at worse possible affected areas in Bombay, which was Marol. By the time we packed up by 10, the rain hadn’t stopped so I took my car and went out. Little knowing that my car would get stuck.
Aarti Kapur Singh: And then you walked back home and fell ill in the process? We heard you were down with leprospirosis and you went straight to the hospital.
Aftab Shivdasani: Yes. That was the next day. But we went back to the location and I slept in the van. Next morning when I woke up, I asked the production car to drop me off to the highway.
What happened was that the whole Western expressway highway was jammed. I'm sure a lot of people must be remembering that, because it was like bumper-to-bumper traffic so I walked all the way back to Bandra, Mt. Mary, from the domestic airport. And as soon as I came home, I started throwing up, got very high fever, and started shivering.
I called a friend of mine and asked him to take me to Lilavati hospital and I was there by 2 o’clock.
Aarti Kapur Singh: Your friend was there for you, but last year was also the time, especially 26 July, when during the rains, the film industry bonded very well. Everybody was there for everybody. Can you think of an incident where you felt that 'this is an event that bought the film industry really close'?
Aftab Shivdasani: Why only the film industry? I’m sure people from all walks of life, on the streets-rich, poor, middleclass-everyone was out there helping each other and there were so many people around, fans, that we actually hitched a ride in the BEST bus.
We didn't have our wallets or any money, so there were these people from the roads, actually from the slums who bought us tickets. So all those people who think Mumbai is the rudest city should get their heads checked.
Aarti Kapur Singh: So the rain was a great leveler. Aftab Shivdasani is not taking any chances this year. Thank you so much for talking to us.
Aftab Shivdasani: My pleasure.
