Chennai: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko's bloodbath speech on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) issue and his demand for an independent Tamil Eelam is catching up everybody's attention.
An FIR has also been registered against Vaiko under three sections of Indian Penal Code including sedition for which he can get life imprisonment.
"It has been quite a long time and we have forgotten what happened in Sriperumbudur. The tigers of freedom and Prabhakaran reside in every Tamilian’s heart. If anything happens to Prabhakaran there will be bloodbath in Tamil Nadu," Vaiko had warned during his speech on Wednesday.
Even by Vaiko's standard the speech was a little too extreme as he's known to make pro-LTTE speeches which have landed him in jail.
But this time he's threatened violence in Tamil Nadu if LTTE chief V Prabhakaran was attacked and on Thursday he reiterated his demand of a separate Eelam nation for the Tamils.
"A sovereign, independent Tamil Eelam nation, a separate nation is the only solution to the burning ethnic problem of the Tamils in the Island. Today again we have adopted a resolution reiterating our stand," said Vaiko.
It's a statement that he hopes will make him the champion of the Tamil cause. But it's something that embarrasses his own ally, J Jayalalithaa's All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Both sides of Tamil Nadu's political divide have parties which are vehemently pro-LTTE.
If it is Vaiko in the Jayalailithaa camp, it is Thirumalavalan in M Karunanidhi's side.
The focus is now on the Election Commission on how it'll react to Vaiko's statement in a season of hate speeches.
"That is a law and order issue which the state government has the sovereign power to handle," said Deputy Election Commissioner JP Prakash.
"No. Not as yet because it is not before the consideration of the Commission," replied Prakash when asked if the Commission was planning any action against Vaiko.
In 2002, Vaiko was arrested under POTA for pro-LTTE speeches and in 2008, he was again arrested under charges of sedition for making similar statements but the arrests seem to have little impact on the MDMK chief.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunananidhi is also defending LTTE chief Prabhakaran. He said that if defeated in the battle, the rebel leader should be treated like a hero.
"Even if Prabhakaran gets defeated in this battle, he should be treated like Alexander treated the defeated king Porus, like a hero," Karunanidhi said.
