After garbage menace, Bangalore residents deal with pothole crisis

Bangalore: After the garbage menace in Bangalore, residents are now dealing with a pothole crisis. There has been nearly a 200 per cent increase in potholes in just one year.

Bangalore may be the leader in the information highway, but when it comes to its roads, it's a sorry story. Recent road statistics show potholes in the city have increased by nearly 200 per cent in one year. The city civic body admits that there are more than 30,000 potholes, but analysts say that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Traffic Analyst MN Srihari said, "If you start really counting then you will realise that the number of potholes could go to 1 lakh also, they have measured only few major roads and if they include the smaller roads, potholes are predominant and they are never filled also."

There has been nearly a 200 per cent increase in potholes in just one year.

Fed up Bangaloreans say the civic agencies of the city are doing nothing to solve the crisis. The city's mayor, though, refutes the charges.

Bangalore Mayir Venkatesh Murthy says, "There are more than 1 crore people in Bangalore, 50 lakh vehicles on the road, this has not been a planned city, but we hope that with people's co-operation we'll be able to sort out the crisis."

With nearly 1.32 lakh square metre of road covered with potholes and chronic traffic jams, Bangaloreans hope that the city administration will get its act together real soon.
