New Delhi: He is arguably India's biggest arms dealer and now, after years of corruption charges, the CBI have Suresh Nanda in their net along with son Sanjeev.
Nanda and his son were arrested after a Saturday night raid in a Mumbai hotel for bribing an Income Tax officer to give him a clean chit on his unaccounted wealth.
CBI officers believe that they can now get the exact details of the unaccounted wealth of Suresh Nanda, part of which he used to buy hotel Claridges in New Delhi.
And the money trail might finally lead not only to Barak, but also to India's former defence minister, Geroge Fernandes, who has also been named as accused for receiving kickbacks in the Barak deal.
The Opposition believes that the Congress want to 'fix' George Fernandes by nailing Nanda.
BJP MP, S S Aluwaliah says, "Barak missile was acquired by the Navy, not by the minister. So how can you blame a minister?"
Nanda is alleged to have received 10 per cent kickback in the Rs 1,100 crore Barak Anti-Missile System deal between an Israeli company and the Indian Army.
Investigations into the deal show that Rs 400 crore was received by Nanda from abroad in various banks accounts in India.
CBI sources have told CNN-IBN that Nanda has used the kickback money to:
- Buy the Claridges Hotel in New Delhi
- Buy the Searock Hotel in Mumbai
- Buy land for a SEZ near Mumbai
- Buy a hotel in Faridabad
But what can put Nanda in a soup is his alleged British passport — he owns a company called Globetech in London and Interpol alleges that he has listed himself as a British national.
