Chennai/Mumbai: Protest is on rise across Australia against the racial attacks and now students of other nationalities are also alleging that they are being racially targetted in Australia.
“Myself and my friend went into the tram and we were about to sit on one of the vacant seats when two white men sitting on the opposite side put their leg on the seat and said "You Indians you can't sit here,” says a student Peter George.
Peter recounts the blatant racism he faced, just a week after arriving in Melbourne in April 2007. Peter says the two Australian men even spat on him.
Not only did the men abuse Peter and his friend but when Peter threatened to go to the police, one of the men taunted Peter and called the cops himself and complained that some Indians were trying to rob him.
“I had heard from so many of my friends and colleagues that so many things happen. They are way laid, attacked and even robbed and most of it is racially motivated,” adds Peter.
Shirish Johri also has a story of horror to tell. He too was attacked but several thousand miles away in London.
“I was attacked in a very posh area of London, which nobody could have expected. A group of around 10 locals attacked me on the road. I was clueless as they were hitting me hard and even damaged my eyes,” says racism victim Shirish Johri.
An IIM Bangalore alumnus, Shirish had joined a company in UK last July. He is still trying to find a reason for the unprovoked attack.
“It could be either due to depression because of the recession or hatred towards the Asians,” adds Shirish.
Recession or racism, the increasing attacks have raised serious concerns over the safety of NRIs.
