What to do with OBC quota beneficiaries: Govt

New Delhi: Fifteen years after the implementation of the Mandal Commission, an exercise was initiated in the government to find out if those who had already benefited from OBC reservations should be excluded from benefits of regular reservations.

But now, it seems that the UPA government has developed cold feet over the issue.

The Supreme Court posed some uncomfortable questions earlier this year before staying the OBC reservation legislation for the academic year 2007-2008.

Although judgement on the matter is still awaited, queries by the apex court had triggered off another exercise by the Centre which, however, has been on back-burner since the past five years.

The exercise aimed to conduct a review of OBC quotas by the Ministry of Social Justice, which would then exclude those castes that had already benefited from reservations.

The government had already faced tremendous flak from Opposition and public alike due to the quota issue earlier this year. The Ministry of Social Justice has, thus, approached the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs for suggestions in the matter.

However, sources have told CNN-IBN that the CCPA has decided to freeze the issue.

The decision was taken after sharp emotionally-charged reactions tore apart the government’s plans.

The Centre’s deferment makes it clear that they want the apex court to take the final call on the matter.
