After snow, J&K braces for deluge

Srinagar: Hundreds of vehicles are being used to provide essential services in the Kashmir valley where's it's been raining very heavily for the past couple of days.

Parts of Srinagar city are already under water and the Jammu-Kashmir National Highway has been cut off more than a week now.

Disaster management meetings were held till late Tuesday evening and officials say the say the situation is quite grim.

“The water level is going up at a fast pace. We'll formally sound an alarm. In official circles, all the zones have been activated,” said Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Basharat Dar.

Residents say that with the highway closed, prices of essential commodities are going through the roof and there are reports of hoarding as well.

“The suppliers have blocked the supplies after the closure of the highway and the commodities are being sold at double the price,” said a resident, Gulzar Ahmed.

With the Meteorological Department saying the rains are likely to continue for at least another day, evacuee boats have been sent to all the districts. Schools in the valley will be closed till the March 24.
