Bangalore: IT companies in Bangalore are tightening their recruitment strategies after Kafeel Ahmed, the alleged Glasgow terror suspect who had worked at a software services company in Bangalore, was caught by the British police.
Infotech enterprises, a software services company with aviation giants like Boeing as its clients, is the company where Kafeel worked as a senior design engineer before going to the UK.
The fact that a Bangalorean was involved in a global terror plot came as a shock not just to several of his friends and family members but also to his former colleagues in this IT company.
And that has prompted IT companies across Bangalore to review security measures, not just external security measures but also secure recruitment procedures.
Many IT companies have less than thorough background screening of recruits. Last year, Nasscom launched a programme to create a national database to serve as a referral point for companies.
It was to include background verification, names, addresses and other details of IT employees. But the Union for IT Services says the programme never quite took off.
“Once all people's names are in a database, it will encourage poaching. Maybe that's what is stopping them,” General Secretary, Union of ITES professionals, Karthik Shekar said.
But the Kafeel Ahmed link might just prove to be the wake-up call the sector needs.
“We have been doing background checks on employee specific accounts based on the requirements of clients. We have heightened security within the company also,” CEO and MD of Infosys, Kris Gopalakrishnan said.
While the BPO business hasn't been affected so far by the terror link, companies are now hoping that the Glasgow terror attack doesn't permanently injure the image of India's silicon city.
