After the storm: Life in relief camps for flood victims

Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh which has asked for Rs 12,000 crore from the Centre is now struggling to feed more than 28 lakh people who have been left homeless due to the flood.

The worst floods to hit Andhra Pradesh in a century have destroyed the homes and belongings of refugees in Vijaywada district, there is hardly anything to recover.

Eight lakh people have become refugees in their own land, taking shelter in hundreds of makeshift relief camps. Many of them were brought to the camp by aid workers in helicopters and boats. And going by the scale of destruction in Andhra Pradesh reaching out these affected families is going to be the biggest challenge for the government.

"There are going to be sanitation and health rehabilitation expenses and people have been employed to work towards it," said District Collector, Krisha, Piyush Kumar.

The damage in Krishna district alone could be around Rs 60 crores. A figure that is likely to go up depending on reconstruction expenses.

Though water has receded and people have started returning back home, settling down is still going to take a lot of time. The biggest challenge the officials have is to try and stop the outbreak of diseases.
