Bangalore: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Karwar and former MP Ananth Kumar Hegde has allegedly threatened Muslims in the state during his speech at an elections rally.
Hegde reportedly threatened to disrupt celebrations of Muslim festivals.
"If Muslims continue to behave like this, it'll become difficult for them to celebrate Id-ul Milad here," Hegde allegedly said.
Hegde is the second BJP candidate spreading the message of intolerance after party candidate from Pilibhit was caught on tape delivering a hate speech against Muslims.
The candidate from Karwar is upset because a BJP worker was allegedly attacked by Muslims. Enraged by the attack, he is cautioning people against the activities of Islamist terror groups.
Taliban terrorists are mostly located in Pakistan. But they are inching towards us, step by step. This is not a small issue. They have spread their network here, in Ankola, in Karwar and Sirsi. If we keep compromising on the basis of political alliances, they will swallow us one day," said Hegde at the rally.
Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer has sent a CD of Hegde's speeches, along with his report, to the Chief Election Commissioner.
But opposition parties claim no action has been taken against Hegde.
"He has threatened and actually he has given a challenge to the Election Commission to take action. Inspite of that, the Election Commissioner didn't' take action. What can I do? So we have to say there is no democracy, no transparency," said RV Deshpande, Congress state unit President.
The BJP has been particularly aggressive in coastal Karnataka in campaigning over the Hindutva issue.
However, Hegde, who claims to have 63 cases against him, is quite unaffected by the backlash from other parties. He has even dared the government to register the 64th case.
