Srinagar: The indefinite curfew continued in Kashmir for the third day on Monday. The curfew was put in place following fears of unrest after the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on Saturday. Extra forces have been deployed in the Valley on the 29th death anniversary of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader Maqbool Bhatt.

Both the Centre and the state government have come under criticism for a spate of preventive arrests and gag order on the media in the Valley.

Press Council Chairman Justic Katju has even written to the Home Ministry. No newspapers are being published in Kashmir, after the state government ordered a temporary ban.

Afzal Guru hanged: Kashmir under curfew for third day

Both the Centre and the state government have come under criticism for a spate of preventive arrests and gag order on the media in the Valley.

However, ironically, the hanging has also resulted in a public spat between the state and the Centre, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself warning that the execution will breed alienation amongst the people in the Valley.

The Congress hit back asking him not to make hasty statements.
