Afzal Guru hanging was not political, secrecy was needed: Shinde

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Monday reiterated that the sudden hanging of Afzal Guru, who was convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack case, on February 9 was not a political decision, adding that the family was informed through speed post on February 7 itself.

Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Shinde denied any connection between the hanging of Afzal Guru and his recent remark on alleged terror links of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the RSS.

Clarifying on the issue, the Home Minister said, "There is no relation of Afzal Guru hanging to my remark (on Hindu terror). Me and my party have already clarified that terror has no colour.

The Home Minister further said, "Afzal's family was informed on February 7 itself through speed post," adding that every step was carried out in accordance with the law.

The Home Minister further said that he had personally informed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on February 8. He further asserted that secrecy was must to be maintained in the Afzal Gur case.

When asked about the request of the family of Afzal Guru to visit his grave, the Home Minister said he would consider the plea of Afzal's family.
