Jammu: Festivities have been put under close scanner in Jammu. With Diwali and Eid falling in the middle of Afzal Guru's death sentence controversy, the security measures have been augmented in the state.

Shops, railway stations, and other public places are on high alert and even firecrackers are being closely scrutinised by the police.

"It is a sensitive moment. So many protests have taken place in Srinagar. One Fidayeen attack took place in Srinagar recently. Jammu has always been sensitive on such occasions," Jammu SSP, Mukesh Singh said.

Jammu city's past track record is not too comforting either. In the year 2002, 28 civilians were massacred in the Rajeev Nagar area besides the Fidayeen attack at the Raghunath temple in the city. A year later, 12 army men were killed in a suicide attack in Sunjwan.

"There are people from militant outfits trying to come to Jammu city and take some adverse action against the forces and the people may be from minority in far flung areas," Inspector General, Jammu range CRPF, JC Dabas said on Friday.

While the Afzal Guru controversy has cast its shadow over Diwali and Eid celebrations, going by the past experience tight security measures are the need of the hour.
