Agassi defends drug use revelations, depression on TV

New Delhi: Former World Number One tennis player Andre Agassi has spoken openly about the reasons for his decision to reveal the secrets of his tryst with drug abuse and also for the first time on tanking matches.
"No. Didn't know what it was. I mean, I had certainly heard things about it, but it was at a time when I was depressed. It was during a time when I was in a life, a marriage, that I didn't want. And somebody came around and offered me an escape and I took it. As a result, it affects you're energy. It effects your desire. I mean I pulled out of everything during that time in my life. I didn't compete hardly at all that year."
Agassi was asked, "You admit you tanked ( deliberately lost) matches. You admit you tanked the 1996 Australian Open semi, I think it was, against Michael Chang. You admit you did it more than once. How do you justify that?"
He replied, "I don't. Here's a person that just didn't want to be out there. I mean when you actually gop the extra mile to make it look like you care about this, but you know deep down the worse thing in the world that could happen would be for me to win and have to come back tomorrow. I wanted no part or it. And you go through this fight with yourself. That's what tennis is and I think that's what makes the sport pretty darn special."
Recently, the eight-time Grand Slam winner had said that revelations in his upcoming autobiography that he used the drug crystal meth during a period of 1997 depression needed to be made public.
The tarnished tennis icon had told the television programme 60 Minutes in an intervie that he does not regret telling all in his book.
