Age row: Congress downplays Army Chief's lawsuit

New Delhi: Army Chief General VK Singh's decision to take the government to the Supreme Court over his age controversy may have shocked many, but the Congress has downplayed the move. As the apex court mulls over his plea, the General may seek a stay on the process of appointing his successor.

In about a week from now, the Supreme Court will take a decision on Singh's plea on his date of birth and it may refer him to a lower court or direct the government to respond.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "If this has happened then it is between the person who has gone to the court and the court. How can we comment on this matter?"

Singh's critics may not agree as they say his appeal to the apex court was timed to coincide with the government's move to begin the process of picking his successor. That may not be possible now, the general may seek a stay order from the court upsetting the entire chain of command and demolishing the promotion prospects of senior officers.

But Singh's backers say he had no choice, his hand forced by the government's seeming indifference to the date of birth issue.
