The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has ordered that no one can leave Shopian without special permission and the police must exhume the bodies of two women, who were allegedly raped and murdered in the town. Kashmir Valley has been seething after a 17-year-old girl and her 22-year-old sister-in-law were found dead in a stream on May 30 in Shopian. The police and the state government first said the women had drowned.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday hailed Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for doing a "competent job", saying her Budget would make train travel "enjoyable ". The Justice M S Liberhan Commission took 17 years to probe and submit a report on the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 16, 1992. Justice Liberhan says a burden is off his shoulders. For the BJP though the burden of history will not be relieved soon.

Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which holds homosexuality as a crime won't be scrapped anytime soon. The Government says it has not made a decision on repealing the law and appears to be wary of religious objection to any amendments. "I have never said it will be repealed--the statement has been misinterpreted," said Law Minister Veerappa Moily on Monday. A leading Islamic seminary has opposed changing the law.
A law which holds homosexuality as a crime and was introduced during the colonial era will be amended only after consulting "all sections" of the society, including religious institutions. Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily says a decision on repealing Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code will not be "rushed". Three Union Ministers are to meet and discuss Section 377 but they may take time on changing the law.

A probe to establish how an American managed to carry a gun in his luggage from the Delhi airport to Chennai says officials in Phoenix airport in Arizona failed to detect the weapon. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security ordered a probe into alleged security lapses at New Delhi's IGI Airport where Sellmeyer Larry was detained on June 11 with an Austrian-made pistol, 35 bullets and three magazines from his baggage.
