The Border Security Force (BSF) has admitted that it "mistakenly" killed a schoolboy outside Kashmir on February 6--the first such confession by security forces in the state. Zahid Farooq, 16, was killed when BSF opened fire on a group of people in Nishat area of Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir's chief minister Omar Abdullah has ordered a probe into the death, the sixth in the past month.

Over a thousand Shiv Sena activists have been arrested in Mumbai for vandalising cinema halls and multiplexes that will screen actor Shah Rukh Khan's new movie My Name Is Khan. Cinemas are though playing safe and have stopped advanced bookings for their movies at their counters. Online bookings are on, however. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok has promised that the Shiv Sena will not be allowed to break the law.

The Shiv Sena executive president, Uddhav Thackeray has that said he will give up the security provided to him by the state government. Uddhav's reaction comes after the Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan threatened to remove his security in the event of attacks on theatres screening Shah Rukh movie My Name is Khan. "You don't have to remove my security cover. I am myself sending my security people back to you," said Uddhav.

The Shiv Sena has broken its word. The party's workers on Tuesday attacked two theatres in Mumbai that will screen actor Shah Rukh Khan's new movie My Name is Khan. As many as 12 Sena activists were arrested for the attacks on the theatres. The Sena violence came a few days after the party had unofficially dissociated itself from banning the movie release in the city.

At least 16 Army soldiers were killed after an avalanche smashed into a military training camp near the border with Pakistan on Monday, said officials. The avalanche hit the Army's High Altitude Warfare School in northwest Kashmir. The accident occurred in Khilanmarg near Gulmarg, a ski resort visited by thousands of people, including some foreigners, every winter.

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh had his patience tested at a four-hour meeting in Bangalore with opponents and supporters of Bt Birnjal. Ramesh said he was seeking a "middle path" in the controversy but that quite didn't come out at the meeting on Saturday. "I am not a Monsanto agent--you need help," Ramesh snapped at one protester.
