Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday refused to allow commercial cultivation of BT Brinjal for now. Ramesh put a moratorium till the time a consensus is not built within the scientific community on whether BT Brinjal is fit for human consumption or not.

Training turned terror for avalanche hit J-K Army jawans

Captain Prateek portambekar of 11 grenadiers was on the slopes of Khilanmarg when an unexpected avalanche came rolling down burying him and 17 of his fellow soldiers. All of them were training to defend the country's icy borders.

Army battles deadly avalanches on icy mountain tops

At least 18 Indian Army jawans have been killed in two deadly avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir. The first avalanche hit the soldiers at the High Altitude Warfare School. The soldiers were at training at the base camp at Khillanmarg 600 metres above Gulmarg. Khilanmarg Base Camp is at a height of 11,000 feet.

Govt plans ban on sugar for industrial use

In a bold and drastic new plan to bring down sugar prices the Union Government is proposing a ban on the use of domestic sugar by industry. According to the new plan sweets makers, soft drink makers, ice cream manufacturers, chocolate companies and biscuit makers will have to import sugar for their products. Bulk consumers account for two third of the sugar consumed in India. Most of the sugar is used by confectionery and soft drink makers.
