India has successfully test-fired Agni III, India’s best long-range missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads and reach targets across much of Asia.
Does the missile’s successful launch prove India’s nuclear capabilities? Will Agni III, which can reach major cities in China and targets deep in West Asia, impact foreign relations?
CNN-IBN’s Vidya Shankar Aiyar asked this to Bharat Karnad, research professor of national security studies at the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi
Agni III’s impact
Karnad said India must have an array of tactical missiles and must not worry about the impact on its relations with China and other countries.
‘Why should they take have any problems. It is purely a sovereign prerogative development system for India’s security. It is India’s business whether to conduct it for our security,” said Karnad.
The Agni III is the first test and more tests have to be carried out. To make it militarily serviceable missile, a thermo- nuclear warhead has been installed. And this is the kind of technology that India needs to stand in the strategic list, said Karnad.
