Agra: As the city of the Taj Mahal battles rising pollution levels, police have begun seizing auto rickshaws and taxis running on diesel or petrol after an order made it mandatory to run such vehicles on compressed natural gas (CNG).
Auto rickshaws and taxis run on petrol or diesel were banned here by the district administration from Wednesday, implementing an order almost a year after it was issued in September 2006.
The auto rickshaw owners have been asked to switch over to CNG, said Senior Superintendent of Police Hari Ram Sharma Saturday.
Over the weekend, police fined dozens of auto rickshaw drivers and impounded several vehicles.
Auto drivers, however, are unhappy as they feel the ban was hastily imposed without making provisions for enough CNG outlets.
