Condoms, balloons unnerve Railway officials

Mumbai: What does the HIV virus actually look like? A giant 65-kg installation made up of 20,000 balloons and 12,000 condoms unveiled in the heart of Mumbai right outside the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus tries to give us an idea of what an HIV virus would look like under an electron microscope.

The installation was unveiled to commemorate World AIDS Day. The event was organised by socialite Parmeshwar Godrej with a guest list that included Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi and Bollywood biggies Farhan Akhtar and Karan Johar.

“AIDS is no different. We don't change our behaviour for those who have the flu so we shouldn't for those suffering from this virus,” Akhtar said.

Ironically, the installation – set up to create AIDS awareness and promote safe sex had to be taken down shortly – since certain Railway officials and bureaucrats weren't too comfortable with the idea of 12,000 condoms being seen in a public place.
