New Delhi: Dengue is spreading across the capital. The number of infected people at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) rose to 45 on Monday, and the outbreak looks like it could fast develop into an epidemic.

"I saw the TV reports about dengue, and I was afraid. My daughter had fever and after a check up at AIIMS she was diagnosed with dengue," said Biswajit, father of one patient at AIIMS.

The hospital has set up special OPD (Out Patient Department) for screening patients suffering from fever. Over 1500 patients have been examined and 15 admitted in the past 24 hours at the AIIMS. Hospital authorities admit that the load is getting hard to handle.

"All patients who have fevers are being referred to AIIMS. Any patient that has been diagnosed with low blood platelets in blood is being referred here. There's hardly any space even in the casualty ward" Randip Guleria Professor of Medicine at AIIMS said.

The patients too are complaining about the lack of facilities in the hospital. "It's extremely dis-organised. They don't have enough stretchers or even beds," said Mohshin, relative of a patient.

The hospital authorities at the AIIMS have decided to augment casualty and emergency services to cope with the increasing number of patients. "The corridor outside the new emergency board has been converted into a shelter for screening the patients. We have also identified some beds in the intensive ward," Professor of Community Medicine at AIIMS, Bir Singh said.

The Delhi Health Minister will decide on Tuesday whether to declare dengue an epidemic. It's a decision that could be overdue.
