New Delhi: Dr P Venugopal can continue as director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) but not as a professor in the institution, the Delhi High Court ruled on Thursday.
Venugopal is head of the cardiology department. "The director cannot hold two posts and after appointment as director of the institute, his post as professor is terminated," a Bench comprising Justice Swantantra Kumar and Justice H R Malhotra said.
The Court gave two weeks for the order’s implementation.
It ruled that Union Health Minister A Ramadoss, with whom Venugopal has a disagreement over how AIIMS should be run, could be nominated to the governing body of the Institute.
The court has also asked the centre to frame a new management policy for AIIMS. Ramadoss last year dismissed Venugopal as AIIMS’ chief but the High Court scrapped that order.
The Court delivering verdict on a batch of petitions filed by an NGO 'Centre for Public Interest Litigation' and the Government challenging the appointment and continuance of Venugopal as the Director and a professor simultaneously.
