AIIMS docs suspend strike

Press Trust Of India

New Delhi: The strike by AIIMS resident doctors and faculty members was suspended on Friday night and they resumed work immediately.

The decision to suspend the strike, called to protest the move to sack AIIMS Director P Venugopal, was taken at a general body meeting of the Resident Doctors' Association on Friday night.

"We have suspended our agitation and are resuming duties immediately", RDA President Binod Patro said.

On remarks made by Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss that punitive action would be taken against striking doctors, he said "we will closely monitor the situation over the next two days and will go on agitation if action is taken".

The strike had begun on Wednesday soon after the AIIMS' Institute Body headed by Ramadoss recommended the dismissal of Venugopal on the charge of violating the code of conduct by going public with criticising the Health Minister's alleged interference in the functioning of the Institute.
