New Delhi: Within minutes of the High Court directing the Centre to intervene in the matter, Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss agreed to immediately sign degrees of the resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, who are planning to go abroad.

Ramadoss assured resident doctors that by September 25, all the degrees will be handed out at the convocation.

“Those doctors who are in a hurry to go abroad can come to me and their degrees will be signed within 1-2 days. While the rest of the degrees will be handed over by next month,” Ramadoss said on Thursday.

Meanwhile the resident doctors are now seeking legal advice to validate the degrees without Ramadoss’ signatures.

The resident doctors of AIIMS called off their strike early Thursday afternoon after holding a meeting with the AIIMS director Dr Venugopal. They said that the degrees have not been handed over as a result of an ego tussle between Dr Venugopal and Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss.

The Resident Doctors Association said that 700 doctors may have to forego their careers since their degrees have not been signed yet. Although AIIMS Director Venugopal insisted that these will be handed out on September 25, the doctors said that it will be too late and will result in a loss of an entire academic year for those seeking a career abroad.

The MBBS doctors need degrees before September 1 in order to seek admission this academic year in institutions abroad.

“Degrees have been given without convocation in the past as well. Why cant they do it now,” Dr Khaitan President Resident Doctors Association said.

The health minister on Wednesday said that the AIIMS has been producing doctors for the UK, US and that it is this vested interest that is provoking these strikes. He also said that the degrees are illegal.

"The certificates of the degrees were signed by the registrar of AIIMS, Dr Sandeep Agarwal. However, Dr Agarwal's appointment as registrar does not have the approval of the Governing Body, and therefore these documents are illegal and I cannot put my signature on illegal documents," said Ramadoss on Wednesday.

The resident doctors are demanding immediate handing over of their medical degrees and have given a 2-day deadline to the Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss.

Meanwhile the patients are bearing the brunt of the tussle between the health ministry and the resident doctors. The OPD services remained paralysed on Thursday while all the doctors absent from duty.
