New Delhi: Dr P Venugopal is on the verge of retirement as the Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the institute has drawn up a list of prospective successors for the top job.
Meanwhile, the doctors remain adamant that they do not want Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss to be the one deciding who will be the director.
Having got himself reappointed as a director of AIIMS through a Supreme Court order, Dr Venugopal is now taking the battle to his rivals' camp.
The Faculty Association of AIIMS, consisting largely of Dr Venugopal's supporters, has now written to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) asking for a reduction in Ramadoss' powers.
They want different members in the committee which will chose Dr Venugopal's successor.
"The post of the director of AIIMS is very crucial. So we want the appointment to be directly under the PMO," Dr Binod Khaitan, President of AIIMS Faculty Association, says.
With Dr Venugopal's retirement due in the first week of July, the Faculty Association fears the appointment of a doctor belonging to the Health Minister's camp to the post of director.
To avoid such a situation the Faculty Association has asked for the inclusion of 23 eminent persons in the selection committee.
Some of names recommended are:
- Prof P Venugopal
- Prof MS Valiathan
- Prof CNR Roa (Scientific Advisor to the PM)
- Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia
- Fali S Nariman
- Soli Sorabjee
- Prof Deepak Pental (Vice Chancellor, Delhi University)
The PMO however is yet to respond to the Faculty Association's request though the list of front-runners for the directors post is increasing
These include:
- Dr N P Gupta (Head of Urology, AIIMS)
- Dr GK Rathi (IRCH)
- Dr K K Talwar (Director, PGI Chandigarh)
- Dr M C Mishra (Trauma Centre)
- Dr kartar Singh (PGI Chandigarh)
- Dr R C Dekka (Dean Academics, AIIMS)
- Dr Sunita Mittal (Head of Gynaecology, AIIMS)
But caught in the crossfire is the welfare of patients, who only want good treatment, whoever the director, whatever the committee.
