AIIMS refused treatment to a tribal youth who had a bullet stuck in his head. Finally, the High Court had to step in.
Shivlal Soren, a tribal youth from Jharkhand, has a bullet stuck in his brain and this has rendered one of his eyes useless. He was brought to AIIMS on January 31 but for three days, he was refused admission on one pretext or the other.
It took a High Court order to finally get him admitted.
Soren's advocate, Jai Singh says, "We went to the High Court and told them that he is being not attended to. The High Court then ordered the AIIMS advocate to admit Soren immediately."
Soren was hit by a bullet when police open fired at a protest demonstration in Dumka on December 6. The Jharkhand Police later arrested him and it was they who brought him to the AIIMS hospital.
However, at AIIMS, he was shunted from the Trauma Centre to the Eye Casualty Centre and then to Neurosurgery Department. Finally an NGO took up his case and filed a petition with the Delhi High Court.
Meanwhile, the AIIMS administration refutes the charge that Soren was denied treatment.
"The specialist doctors have the authority to decide whether a patient needs to be admitted or not," said an AIIMS spokesperson.
“No hospital can refuse to give emergency treatment to a patient on the pretext of money or any other complication. They have to stabalize him and save his life,” added Health Minister, Ramadoss.
AIIMS, a premier health institution, has won a lot of critical acclaim for its services. It is also the preferred treatment destination for the crème de la crème of the Indian society.
But for Shivlal Soren, the stay at AIIMS has been nothing less than a nightmare.
