New Delhi: Through Tuesday, resident doctors from AIIMS tried to fix an appointment with Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss. This, so that the busy minister could take time out to sign their degree certificates, enabling them to apply overseas for higher studies. However, the Minister, it seemed had no time for the doctors.
"Our registrar was called here. He waited for three hours. Then he was told the Minister has no time. He is jeopardising the careers of 700 doctors," said President of AIIMS Resident Doctor Association, Dr Harish Kumar.
Doctors and faculty in AIIMS say the delay is part of the power struggle between Ramadoss and the institute's director P Venugopal over the Valiathan committee that was set up to nurse the 50-year-old institute back to health.
One of the recommendations was that the Health Minister shouldn't be the President of AIIMS.
"We have suggested that an academician should be the president of AIIMS. The minister should head the joint councils of all-India institutes. It's not possible for the minister to look after the day-to-day workings of so many institutes,” said Dr Valiathan of the committee.
The report has been ready for the past eight months and is lying with the Government even as Ramadoss keeps himself busy fighting for the control of the premier hospital with Venugopal.
