New Delhi: The turmoil in aviation sector has touched Air India too. After the infamous lay-off by Jet Airlines, the employees of Air India are a worried lot.
The airline has offered its employees an “optional leave without pay” package.
It has become increasingly evident in recent times that airlines across the world are barely managing to keep their head above water.
The setting in of a recession like era has eaten into the resources of most airlines, which have also had to bother with competition.
Therefore, the offer by Air India to its employees has only added to the gloom. Air India management was quick to stress on the fact that the scheme was purely voluntary.
“Air India is going to initiate several measures of cost cutting in which one of the schemes is to offer purely on voluntary basis, a leave without pay package to its employees for a period of three to five years," said Director of Air India, Jitendra Bhargava.
But the timing of this announcement could not have been worse. The laid off employees of Jet Airways are still agitating in Mumbai.
Talks of Air India’s expansion plans being put on hold are already bothering Air India, now employees of this country's oldest airline sense more trouble.
The civil aviation minister however offered some reassuring words
"Those who are working for Air India shall continue to do so, we shall not have any issues of lay offs,” assured Aviation Minister Praful Patel.
As for now, Air India may put on a brave face but with a low liquidity base and rising losses the airline may soon have to implement some tough measures
