Airport workers' strike affects Delhi, Kolkata flights

New Delhi: The Left trade unions have called an All India strike in the country. Apart from the employees of the state-owned banks, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) employees have also joined the strike.

The strike has been called to protest inflation and the ‘anti-people’ and ‘anti-worker’ policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

The strike will be effective from 7am to 7pm. And, the consequences of the strike are clearly visible at the Delhi airport, as the airport seems to be reeling under flight cancellations.

Four outgoing flights from Delhi have been cancelled. This includes four Kolkata bound flights: Jet airways, Jet Lite, Indigo and Kingfisher.

Also, a Go-Air Delhi-Mumbai flight stands cancelled at the moment and also an Air Deccan flight to Guwahati via Bagdogra. In view of the strike the Indian Air Force has decided to deploy its men to handle key airport services throughout the country.

Flights are likely to be cancelled from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport also.

According to the latest reports, all flights have also been cancelled from Kolkata.

Meanwhile, train services have also been severely affected by the strike. Many trains are stranded on the Bengal borders. Even, the Kolkata metro services have also stopped.

Train services from Howrah station are badly hit by the strike. All the long distance trains, which had to arrive in Howrah have reached but the ones which were suppose to leave from the station have been cancelled or rescheduled.

Below are the names of some of the trains, which are stranded at

Howrah station:

  • Vibhuti Express, Shipra Express, Jaganath Express, Gour Express, Darjeeling Mail. Local train services at the eastern & south eastern sections in Howrah.

Details of the long distance trains cancelled from Kolkata:

  • Agniveena Express, Dhauli Express, Ganadevta Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, Black Diamond Express.

Trains which have been stranded:

  • Jodhpur Express, stranded in Pandua
  • Jamalpur Express, stranded in Asansol.
  • Delhi-Janta Express, stranded in Mogra
  • Kamrup Express, stranded in Dandel
  • Doon Express, stranded in Ganpur
  • Kalka Mail stranded in Baichi
  • Vibhuti Express stranded in Durgapur.

Moreover, all flights to and from Kolkata have been cancelled because of the strike till 7:00 pm.
