New Delhi: A Congress councillor was arrested on Friday night in connection with the Akhil Gogoi assault case. Reports allege the person arrested is Councillor Tapan Barman. Gogoi, an RTI activist and a Team Anna member, was attacked by suspected Youth Congress members on Friday in Assam's Nalbari district.
Gogoi had gone to the Dharmapur area to take stock of the flood situation, when he was allegedly attacked with sticks and sharp weapons. He suffered severe head injuries. However, he managed to reach the Nalbari Sadar police station and file a complaint.
Gogoi said he was attacked at the behest of Assam's Agriculture Minister Nilamani Sen Deka, who, however, has refuted the charges.
"I came to know about the incident only after 8 pm yesterday," said Deka, adding, "AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) supporters are behind this attack. AGP President Chandra Mohan Patowary who fought the last elections against me is behind the attack. The conspiracy was hatched by the AGP and the blame was put on me. Akhil should have informed the police before going to an unknown place. It's a political conspiracy against me."
Gogoi is now recuperating at the Nalbari civil hospital.
Noted Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal lashed out at those behind the attack saying they were "obviously" those who were affected by the activist's campaign against corruption.
"We strongly condemn the attack on Akhil Gogoi," he said, adding, "It is being said that he has been attacked by the Congress. Gogoi is a very credible voice aganist corruption in Assam. He takes up issues of corruption affecting the poor and those affected by his campaign are obviously behind attack on him."
