Mumbai: You usually see Akshay Kumar pulling off a mid-air stunt from choppers, but this time, safety comes first as he along with Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir launched a fleet of complete ambulance services - in the air and on the ground.
And in keeping with the tone of the occasion, Akshay made a rather grounded observation.
"What bothers me the most about Mumbai is the traffic and this is a perfect service," he said.
The ground ambulance service which aims to transport cardiac patients within 15 to 30 minutes to any hospital in the city costs Rs 1,500 a trip, but is free if it's a government hospital.
The air ambulance service will operate to and from cities near Mumbai says Vice Chairman & Cardio Vascular Thoracic Surgeon at the Asian Heart Institute Dr Ramakanta Panda, who operated on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently.
"The BMC is sanctioning helipads on buildings. Once that happens, we'll be able to operate within Mumbai," says Dr Panda.
Akshay also launched a cardiac helpline wherein people can call and seek advice or assistance - a boon for an estimated 50,000 Mumbaikars who need medical care or intervention for their cardiac problems.
